FREQUENT QUESTIONS

GENERAL SURGERY QUESTIONS

It is a revolutionary and well-established surgical approach whereby surgery is performed through very small incisions in the abdominal wall to introduce a special long camera and instruments through these incisions viewing everything through a monitor/screen.

Yes, almost all laparoscopic procedures are performed under general anesthesia and it is really for your own safety.

No, unless you have a specific known allergy to the medications used for it, you will not have any relevant unwanted reactions.

It depends on the procedure, but generally the number ranges from 3 to 5 abdominal incisions, most of them 5 millimeters (0.2 of an inch) and the largest ones 12 millimeters (0.47 of an inch).

No, no sutures will be visible, we place internal stitches so that they do not have to be removed afterwards, the only visible thing will be some adhesive strips. Also, we do not use staples on your skin!

Not at all, they are made of titanium and do not cause any adverse reaction. They can remain in place for life. The clips are used for example to close the duct that connects the gallbladder to your body.

It is a sterile knitted material made of synthetic or biological material; the meshes are very resistant and strong, but very thin, soft and flexible to allow them to easily adapt to your body.

Depending on the repair technique used, the mesh may be placed under or over the defect in the abdominal wall and held in place with specially designed sutures or staples.

The meshes are actually made and placed expecting a reaction from the body to them, the key here is the type of mesh used to have a proper reaction and depending on the case, Dr. Rosales will decide which one is best for you.

No, in most cases we do not leave drains. It depends on the procedure performed, the procedures in which there is mostly the possibility are: cholecystectomy and giant incisional hernia repair.

It all depends on the case, in general, it can be withdrawn the day of your discharge.

During your hospital stay, we will take care of everything, at the time of discharge, you will be able to restart your regular medications, unless Dr. Rosales tells you otherwise.

The same day of the procedure you will be able to walk without difficulty and with only slight discomfort at the incision sites.

You will at least be able to drink fluids that afternoon.

Usually only one day, two days maximum, depending on the procedure.

After almost all procedures performed laparoscopically, our patients are able to engage in regular activity once they get home, return to work in 5 to 7 days and, if it is a desk job, perhaps even sooner.

You will walk the same day of surgery; Regular intensity cardio activity at 15 days and at 30 days you can do whatever you want (e.g. sit-ups, weight lifting, etc.).

Not necessarily, it depends on the procedure performed.

It is always more difficult to "work" on a "non-virgin" abdomen, but in the vast majority of cases the results are the same and are closely related to the type of surgery performed previously.
